Pogue Recounts Days of Tech Without Power

Like many this past week who were without power in the State of Connecticut (due to last weekend's storms that hit the region), The New York Times' technology columnist David Pogue had to make due with what he had at his disposal. Unlike most Nutmeg State residents, Pogue still had to review technology products and produce videos for CNBC and the NYTimes.com.

In a post on his blog Pogue's Posts, he recounts how in his time without power, he was able to do a review of a Jawbone bluetooth device, how he charged his gadgets and how his ability to use a cellphone as a modem was essential.

Shine and the Stripped Down World of Online News

In a recent feature article in The New York Times, Brandon Holly, the editor in chief of Yahoo's Shine, a Web site for women, talked about some of the differences between running a online news site as opposed to when she was the editor in chief of Jane, the young woman's magazine formerly published by Condé Nast

Besides the fact that she now works from home in Brooklyn and deals with most of her staff remotely,  she no longer enjoys the perks of a top office at Condé, which included a expense account, front rows at fashion shows and invitations to high profile Hollywood parties.

In a recent interview with eConsultancy, CEO Patrick Keane explained that for the past 5 years, revenues have grown 100% year over year and that in the past year, the site has had over 300,000 registered contributors, who publish about 10,000 new pieces of content weekly.

Keane credits this success to content that targets very specific groups and is easy to find online. According to Comscore, Associated Content has16 million unique visitors monthly, with 90% coming through search.

NY Times Partners with News Aggregator Fwix

The New York Times and its related properties will begin offering news links and excerpts from a network of news sources from Fwix, a news aggregator startup, which, according to The Financial Times, bills itself as a "local online newswire."

The publication adds that the deal will help The Times and its other titles supplement traditional news coverage and cover more local news.

Fwix was founded in 2008 by Darian Shirazi, a 23-year-old former software engineer at Facebook and Ebay.  The company is backed by $2.5 million in funding from BlueRun Ventures, an early investor in PayPal, the online payment system.
