Spending Cuts Continue in NYC Tech Companies

Due to the dwindling economy, digital media companies around the City are losing office perks like microbrewery beer, snacks, free gym passes and game rooms. Among them is publisher Mansueto, which owns Fast Company and Inc Magazine.

Following up on Wednesday's news of The New Yorker going digital, those interested to receive it in its electronic form can sign up here. Mediabistro reports that subscribers can have editions emailed to them and have access to The New Yorker archives dating back to February 1925.

HSBC Sponsors Entire Issue of 'New York' Magazine

The bank has purchased 24 advertising pages in this week's issue, making it the largest single-issue advertiser in the magazine's history.  In addition, HSBC will be the sole advertiser for NYMag.com on Monday and Tuesday with a significant presence in the online edition through the remainder of the week.

OpenGate Buys TV Guide for $1

An SEC filing made by Macrovision yesterday reveals that private equity partner OpenGate is paying just $1 for TV Guide along with receiving a $9.5 million loan from Macrovision for the purchase.

Macrovision plans to sell the TV Guide cable channel separately.

Future of TV Guide Uncertain

After being sold by Macrovision to OpenGate Capital earlier this week, TV Guide's new owners have decided to keep the NY-based media outlet in New York. Current editor-in-chief Debra Birnbaum and president Scott Crystal are expected to stay on board, the fate of the rest of the staff, however, is unknown.

OpenGate is the third corporate owner of TV Guide in this past year. Macrovision bought the property for $2.8 billion. The amount paid by OpenGate has not been disclosed.

CosmoGirl Out of Print

Hearst has stopped the presses at CosmoGirl, explaining that the company is consolidating its teen print efforts with Seventeen magazine. The publication will remain active online at CosmoGirl.com. No word yet on how this will impact the magazine's employees here in NYC.

NYMag.com Uses Gossip to Drive Site Traffic

According to The Observer, NYMag.com drives its traffic with material that editor in chief Adam Moss might not necessarily endorse. New York Magazine's web designer Ian Adelman said that the site's blog Daily Intel is "sort of news, gossip," which goes against Moss' stance on reporting gossip.

Economist Launches Cultural Festival

Beginning October 31, the magazine will be hosting a three-day program of cultural events in NYC called Off The PageMixed Media blogger Jeff Bercovici points out that the festival bears a striking similarity to The New Yorker's The New Yorker Festival.  Paul Rossi, the Economist Group's managing director for the Americas, says it isn't and that it's merely a consolidation of events which the publication hosts.

Durst Asks Conde Nast to Stay Put in 2019

New York City development company Durst Organization has made Conde Nast an offer to remain in its home in 4 Times Square when the publisher's lease runs on in 2019. However, according to Conde Nast's leader Si Newhouse, the current 800,000 square foot space will to not be big enough to sustain their needs ten years from now. The publisher is currently considering relocating to the Hudson Yards or into a complex yet to be built on Ninth avenue in the 30s.

Patrick McMullan Company Launches Mag for iPhone

MediaPost's MediaDailyNews

Hot Phone Hit Factory and the famed NYC nightlife photographer have partnered to launch a new fashion magazine, PMc.  It will be available exclusively on the Apple iPhone, published bimonthly, and distributed through iTunes for 99 cents per issue.

The magazine is set to launch during New York's Fashion Week in September 2008.
