Verizon Cuts Phone Deal With Frontier Communications

Today Verizon announced that it has reached a deal with Stamford, Connecticut based Frontier Communications Corp. which will sell its phone service in more rural parts of the country.  Frontier will now have 4.8 million phones lines and 1 million broadband connections to sell to residential and small businesses in areas such as Ohio, Michigan, Nevada, Idaho and West Virginia.

This sale does not affect Verizon customers in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut, as Verizon wants to concentrate rolling out its fiber optics and FiOS services to the tri-state area.

NJ Att'y General Sues Verizon for FIOS Marketing

The state's attorney general has alleged that Verizon has failed to provide the promotional gifts promised to subscribers to the service and charged higher prices than those quoted in advertisements, including previously unmentioned "activation fees."

Verizon's NJ president Dennis Bone responded in a statement that these allegations are based on actions that occurred during the initial rollout of the service in the state about two years ago and have since been addressed.

Regardless, the NJ Division of Consumer Affairs has set up a FiOS complaint form and survey on its Web site at http://njConsumerAffairs.gov/fios.htm.

FiOS Brings Web to TV in Upgrade

New Yorkers with Verizon FiOS service will soon have a more integrated television and Web experience with Verizon planning to upgrade its TV widgets platform and open it up to third party developers. To start, FiOS will bring Facebook and Twitter to TV screens and give the DVR access to YouTube and other online video sites through an "Interactive Media Guide". Targeted TV Ads Debut in Tri-State Area

Cablevision will begin selling targeted television ads that will be seen by its customers in Brooklyn, The Bronx and parts of New Jersey. The company is working with New York-based Visible World to harness public demographic data for targeting households with ads that reflect their means. After an eight month test, Cablevision concluded that targeted ads were more successful at bringing in new subscriptions.  NYConvergence should point out that publicly-available demographic data will allow Cablevision to skirt any concerns regarding targeting advertisements based on other, more private data they may collect.

Another New York-based ad targeting company Invidi is now working with Comcast and will soon work with Verizon to bring targeted ads to their cable subscribers. In addition to public data, Invidi uses TV viewing information from remote controls, ratings information and program guides to target households.
