Staffing Changes Planned at Gawker Media

Nick Denton, publisher of Gawker Media, will be stepping down as Gawker's managing editor soon and as The Insider noted, has been hinting at additional staffing changes at Gawker Media's other blogs.  New staff members are likely to be hired for the company's highly-trafficked Web sites Gizmodo and Kotaku while other, less visited properties might see layoffs.  However, given Denton's penchant for switching staff between properties, such as moving Jezebel blogger Moe Tkacik over to Gawker earlier this year, some staff might find themselves writing about topics with which they're far less familiar.

Gawker is due to break site traffic records again this month with 23 million page views. Its traffic has increased three-fold since last December when Denton returned to its helm.

Placeblogging Gains Popularity in Tristate Area

The New York Times | AVC.com

Hyperlocal reporting or placeblogging is gaining ground in the New York tristate area, according to the New York Times. Bloggers in suburban New Jersey, New York and Connecticut are reporting on the things happening in their neighborhoods to an increasingly growing and engaged audience.

For some, like The Loop, a blog founded last year for Westchester outside of the City, the site came out of necessesity due to a lack of local newspaper coverage in the area.

Other popular local blogs include:
- Baristanet.com (Montclaire, NJ. Founded in 2004. Now has 82,000 monthly visitors, which equates to $10,000 monthly profits from advertising.)
- Red Bank Green (Red Bank, NJ. Founded in 2006 by former Star-Ledger reporter. Has 45,000 monthly visitors.)
- Hoboken411 (Hoboken, NJ. Founded in 2006. Has more than 250,000 monthly visitors.)
- WestportNow (Westport, CT. Founded in 2003. Has 40,000 monthly visitors.)
- NewHavenIndependent (New Haven, CT. Founded in 2005.)
