Internet Week NY: Silicon Alley v. Silicon Valley (Again)

As Internet Week kicks into high gear, it seemed that it would only be a matter of time until the inevitable comparisons were made between Silicon Valley and NYC’s Silicon Alley.  According to an article on CNN.com,  Silicon Alley startups such as Tumblr, Foursquare and Gilt Groupe are helping to heat up the tech market in NYC, giving the Valley a run for its money.

The article stresses that they key points of the debate lie in the differences between business connections and quality of life issues.  For business, it found that the Valley is good if a tech startup needs heavy engineering and something more research oriented, while NYC is better for social innovation.  As for quality of life issues, while it is hard to compare most cities with NYC when it comes to entertainment and things to do, other feel that it lacks the open space of the Valley and that it is far more expensive.
