Sixty-One-Year Old Joins NY's 'Digerati'

In an op-ed published in The New York Times, James R. Gaines, a former editor for Time, Life, and People, shares his thoughts about working at a New-York based startup FLYP.  FLYP is an online digital publication that combines text with Flash animation, motion graphics and streaming audio and video to tell stories.  According to Gaines, he's had to:

  • Learn about video codecs and MySQL databases
  • "Sustain, to provide and sometimes to teach, not necessarily to be a friend" to his employees, all of whom are much younger than him

Overall, he feels that the shift to digital has not diminished from the job he "learned to love when young ... to tell stories" as "the story has lost nothing in this transition."
