NYU's Penenberg: Viral Marketing Boosts Startups

New York University (NYU) professor of journalism Adam Penenberg's new book, Viral Loop, examines the viral marketing tactics used by "successful Web-based businesses" such as Facebook, PayPal, and Hotmail.  While explaining the "viral loop", he offers tips for startups today on how it works such as:

  • Reaching out to a business' core consumers as they'll "ultimately become the billboard for a business and spread the word."
  • Uniting social networks and the mobile Internet into a vital platform in the manner of the Obama campaign.
  • Getting people to make recommendations through their online social network.
