Flat World Lets Students Access Books Online
Like its competitors, Nyack, N.Y.-based Flat World Knowledge recruits authors and produces titles on major academic subjects. But, students can access digital versions of Flat World's books for free, or pay between $30 and $60 for a printed one. Books, even specific chapters, are available in PDF and audio form for a fee, and the company sells related study guides, quizzes, and other supplementary materials.
Flat World was launched with eleven titles in August of this year, plans to release 18 books next year, and publish 45 in 2011. In addition to "snagging" 75 authors already, the publisher has received $10 million in venture-capital funding from High Peaks Venture Partners, Valhalla Partners, and Greenhill SAVP.
