Internet Week: What's Social Media Marketing?

NYConvergence ORIGINAL

The presenters and panelists at Mashable's Third Nextup NYC attempted to answer that question last night at "Social Media Marketing 101" held at the 92YTribeca in Manhattan's TriBeCa neighborhood.

Presenters included:

  • Appssavvy's Chris Cunningham who spoke about how brands should consider custom Web-based applications rather than immediately trying to tap into established Web sites like Facebook.
  • Edelman's Stevel Rubel highlighted the "five trends to watch in social media," including building relationships online, the growth in "digital curatorship" or the use of multiple channels to reach consumers, providing consumers with useful information over just speaking about your brand, tapping into your company's most Web-savvy employees to run your online efforts, and building your online content so that it's useful for not just your target audience.

The event closed with a panel discussion led by Mashable's Pete Cashmore and whose participants included: Scott Harrison, Founder, Charity:Water, Steve Rubel, Stephanie Agresta, TechSet, and Toby Daniels, Twestival NYC.  The panel discussed how social media has been a boon to charity organizations looking to connect with individuals who can contribute small payments and the recent Domino's Pizza viral-video debacle where two wayward employees filmed themselves defiling customers' food.  Cashmore also called Rubel to the carpet for Edelman's "flog" controversy, the creation of fake blogs for Wal-Mart, but this was little dwelled on and dodged quite expertly by Rubel.

It's All Very PR
