Panelists Discuss New Rules of IP
This morning, NYConvergence attended the New York: Media Information Exchange Group (NY:MIEG) panel “Keeping it Legal: The New Rules of Digital Media,” at the Time Warner Center.
The panel was moderated by Limor Schafman, President of KeystoneTech Group and featured Fred Benenson, Manager of Outreach: Creative Commons, Ian DiBernardo, Partner of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP, Melinda Lee, Co-Founder of UncensoredInterview.com and Robert Rosenberg, SVP and Counsel of Showtime Networks.
The panel discussed the important aspects of producing content that is usable without running into intellectual property issues, focusing on four major points to remember when dealing with intellectual property laws –
• Talk to your lawyer about what you are trying to do
• Think about copyright issues and laws in order to achieve what you want to do with your project in the end
• Take both an offensive (protecting your intellectual property) and defensive (not using others’ property) role in
developing your content
• Find a lawyer that will help you from both perspectives
Overall, the legal aspect of digital media is still evolving and changing. There are still gray areas and uncertainty about a variety of issues, from intellectual property to trademarks.
