Verizon Service Outage Above Flatiron District
UPDATED: Verizon tells us a service outage in Manhattan we reported on earlier was caused by a "wet splice"-- basically moisture of some sort-- in a manhole at 30th street and Fifth Avenue. A spokesman says 79 working lines were affected, and 13 people reported the outage. Workers were heating and drying the cable, and service was expected to be restored by this evening. A Verizon recorded alert said service would be restored by 9 PM.
Earlier, the company had promised restoration of service by Thursday at 7:30 PM. Affected customers can call Verizon at 800-VERIZON to ask that calls to affected lines be forwarded to a working line, such as a cell phone number. The forward is supposed to automatically end when landline service resumes. Customers are to be informed by phone when service has been restored. Account charges will be adjusted to account for the lack of service, an agent said.
