Coast Guard Taps NJ Satellite Comm. Company
Ft. Lee-based Orbcomm Inc. will work with the Coast Guard to develop a way to monitor ships more than 2,000 miles from U.S. shores from space. As part of the $8 million deal, the Coast Guard helped fund the development of one of the company's satellites and is testing the device to see if they're fit for service.
The satellite was one of the six the company launched in June that are capable of detecting the signals large, ocean-faring vessels transmit to avoid collisions. Earlier this month, the Coast Guard contracted with the company for $500,000 to use its ship-tracking service's "high-usage option."
