MTA Phasing Out Info Line For Subway Payphones
With just 1,900 calls placed during an average month, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is planning to put an end to the payphone #3333 service, which allows riders to get updated subway information below ground.
Since 2001, when the service was introduced, communication has evolved dramatically. To keep up with the times, the MTA now offers a weekend service e-mail alert, to which 80,000 straphangers subscribe. Next month, the MTA also plans to begin its real time text message alerts, which would allow passengers to receive updates on major service disruptions throughout the day on their cell phones.
