Housing Crash Partial Cause of Cuts at Jersey Papers
With The New York Times shutting down its Newark and Trenton bureaus, The Star-Ledger cutting its staff dramatically and The Bergen Record closing its main office, explanations for the demise of local New Jersey newspapers are being sought.
Donald Newhouse, President of Advance Publications, owner of the Ledger, claims that the downturn in real estate is a major factor in revenue losses. Also to blame is the fierce print media competition in New Jersey. In total, there are 18 daily local newspapers throughout the state.
