Is Verizon Gambling with FiOS?

As Verizon rolls out FiOS service in New York City, it is seeing some fruits of its $23 billion planned investment into the technology. In neighborhoods where the service is available, roughly 20% have signed up for the video component that boasts more HD channels than other NYC cable providers, and 24% have signed up for Internet access, the speed of which is uncontested at 50 megabits per second.

Skeptics of Verizon's investment in the new technology are claiming that the company may never profit from it as it is actually potentially  losing as much as $769 on each FiOS customer. As new technologies are developed and deployed, FiOS' ultimate success or failure may take as long as 10 years to establish.
